Final Project Proposal

Ryan Lynn

I have chosen to write an original short story that will embody many of the themes and ideas that have been introduced and argued in many of the readings. The central argument or theme of the story will be that technology should be kept in check and that there should be limitations to what we invent. The story will be an exaggerated tale about a technological event that has almost led to the complete extinction of the human race in a world where scientists do not have moral limitations. The counter-argument to this story would be that allowing scientists to have less limitations on what they can or cannot research could lead to beneficial breakthroughs for the human race. I will be using ideas discussed in Bill Joy's essay, such as the idea of technology becoming the dominant race, and also Jimmy Corrigan, which showed that isolation can lead to social awkwardness. I will also use pop culture sci-fi references.

What's the story? That seems to be the obvious initial question here. What about the particular nature of the story will add to the conversation? Without saying something about what the story is, this doesn't really seem like a proposal at all.

At the moment I have a few ideas floating around and I am still deciding the main storyline. One aspect would be that humans have been driven to live in underwater colonies after their own technology has drained the Earth of most of its natural resources. Past scientists were given free range to create and discover without boundaries in hopes of ushering in a utopian age. But the opposite occurred in its place. The colonies are for the most part in isolation from each other. They also have limited forms of communications and each colony has developed its own unique culture/social mannerisms which has somewhat divided mankind. I was also thinking of possibly adding a religious aspect, but am still pondering the subject.
