Dr. Adam Johns
Stem cell research will become more prevalent over the next few years mainly due to the recent lift of the ban on the research. I plan on examining the different types of stem cells that can be used and determining which will benefit us more and why. The main focus of my paper will involve why adult stem cells are safer to use than embryonic stem cells. Though embryonic stem cells are more efficient, adult stem cells do not require the killing of innocent life. With this I can tie in the religious aspects, such as when does the embryo receive a soul and is the embryo human when it is harvested. Since stem cell research and genetic engineering go hand-in-hand, I could bring into account some of the things discussed in class, such as our collective meaning. I can use Joy and McKibben as some sources as well as various other books and reliable internet sites. I can develop the counter argument simply by proving that adult stem cells can reap the same benefits as embryonic stem cells without the worry of killing innocent life.

What are you arguing, really? It seems like arguing that adult stem cells are more useful than embryonic stem cells is, by itself, a fairly empty argument, unless you're trying to draw consequences from it. Maybe you're really arguing that the ban should be re-instituted? I'm not sure - but your particular argument is unclear here, which is a problem, especially when you're working with a very popular and well-explored topic - finding your own distinctive voice in a popular topic is doable, but it's a challenge that you need to really focus on.
Stem cell research along with genetic engineering will become more prevalent over the next few years mainly due to the recent lift of the ban on the research. I plan on examining the different types of stem cells that can be used and drawing consequences from each to determine which type will be the most beneficial to humanity. Along with this thought, I must determine what the "most beneficial type of stem cell" will be used for. Should it be used freely by scientists any way they see fit? Or, should it only be used to cure diseases? Diseases ranging from cancer to genetic disorders can potentially be cured by way of stem cells.
Countering this argument, I will prove that the most beneficial stem cell will be useful in curing diseases without the suffering of any consequences. Consequences could include: killing innocent life, as is for the harvesting of embryonic stem cells, and the collective loss of meaning.
Using sources worked with throughout this semester, i.e. McKibben and Joy, along with reliable internet sites and books, I will be able to effectively determine the most beneficial type of stem cell and what it should be used for.
