Final Project Proposal

Alisha Nesbitt

For my final project I'm to use the character Paul Titus from

the book Lilith's Brood, and write journal entrys from the time

before his is taken way from Earth until a little after he wakes

up from hurting Lilith. As I'm writing the journal entrys

argument will be about how making the choice of living with

the Toaht is the best thing for him. For my research I plan to

use different search engines to get background information

about this character, and why Ocavia Butler put Paul Titus in

her book. And those are my main plans so far.

It's an interesting topic for a creative project. Researching the character of Paul Titus isn't going to get you anywhere - there is a body of several dozen papers about Octavia Butler, but none of them (I'm 99% sure) is actually focused on him, although some of them may be useful. The big question here is what you're trying to argue, ultimately, through this creative project. What interests you about him, and what, ultimately, do you want to say about him? Is he representative of human nature? Of male nature? Or does he represent/mean something completely different? Maybe you have no idea yet, but those are some questions you need to be thinking about as you proceed.

Hey Alicia,
I think your idea for your project is so interesting. The approach of a journal really is a neat thing. I can see where finding information about Paul specifically can be a problem. I think it would be a good idea to focus not only on Paul but his aggressive nature and how this nature interacts with other humans. And maybe argue how the effect of a new enviornment can have on this type of nature- "Does it bring out the worst in us" theory.I'm sure that this can provide for better luck in research. Also, what the Oankali really want are a trade, so after seeing this tupe of behavior, do you think the Oankali would alter out this behavior for there future generations or leave it in to provide for a variety of natures? Second, I think it might be a good idea to maybe make the time period longer and say how he feels after his incident with Lilith. I know that what exactly happens to him is unknown, I think it might be a good idea to have him look back and reflect on this.
Well I hope I have been some help!

Alicia,
I agree with Melanie, I think this is a very interesting topic. I also feel like finding research for this paper and running out of things to say after so many pages will be a problem. Yes, he is an interesting character, but there is only so much you can write about someone. I think it may be helpful to step in an out of your journal entries and relate information that you talk about in the journal to previous arguments that have been stated in class or other books.
I'm interested to see how this turns out, I think it's a very creative topic.
Good Luck!
